plural of ‘tondo’, late 19th century’: from Italian, literally ‘round object’, from rotondo ‘round’, from Latin rotundus
The circular shape and frameless, glass format evokes a lens: - standing on tiptoe to peek through a seaside telescope, or getting a look through your Dad’s binoculars. I love that these pieces, by format and shape, have evolved a step further, to become a lens through which past times and memories are glimpsed and half remembered. A prism into the past.
